“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever;

wisdom and power are his.

He changes times and seasons;

he deposes kings and raises up others.

He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.

He reveals deep and hidden things;

he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.

I thank and praise you, God of my ancestors:

You have given me wisdom and power,

you have made known to me what we asked of you,

you have made known to us the dream of the king.”

Daniel 2:20-23 NIV

Have you ever had a vision so big that you couldn’t fully comprehend all that it encompassed?

Have you ever had a vision or dream that seems impossible or unattainable?

Have you ever lost vision because of a lack of clarity or momentum?

Vision is valuable. Vision is vital in determining direction and discerning disposition. Without a clear vision it’s hard to take steps forward. Moving with purpose and courage can become crippled by a lack of envisioning what could be.

God created us with imaginations and creativity that were meant to operate in conjunction with His purposes, plans, and power. We were created in His image (Genesis 1:27) and we are called to reflect that image to the world around us through partnering with Him, allowing Him to align our vision with His. When we see God for who He is—The Way, the Truth, The Life— then we begin to see everything else from His perspective, through the lens of grace, hope, victory, and freedom. His vision is imparted to us by the power of His Spirit that dwells within us.

Vision is seeing what is while also seeing what could be. Beyond the challenges of the now to the possibilities of the not yet. Envisioning is a process of dreaming infused with hope and expectancy in Christ and His promises. His life and victory made way for the resurrection and revival of God’s original reality of life with Him. He gives us His vision to awaken this reality here and now. He gives a broad vision of His Kingdom while also giving individual visions according to the unique gifts and experiences He has crafted in each of us. Before you can take action to see the vision He imparts come to pass, you have to learn to sit with it and hold it loosely, allowing it the freedom to be altered and made more clear through the surrender of it. Acting on a vision prematurely can develop cropped images, not allowing the full picture to come into view.

Sitting with God, dreaming with Him, and allowing His sight to become your own can be a long, but beautiful process. Like scales falling from your eyes— light, wonder, and mystery flooding into your horizons for the first time—the exhilaration of catching a glimpse of what God is doing and longs to do through His people brings the world to life in extraordinary new measures of reality. He longs to “reveal deep and hidden things” to us through our communion with Him.

Faith fuels the process as you continually choose to trust God with the outcome. Sometimes God imparts the vision in parts. Different seasons or circumstances hold the opportunity for the vision to deepen or expand in clarity if you are willing to be intentional with God in the process. Let Him illuminate your imagination. Don’t dwell in the dark patches of the vision that are still yet to unfold. Linger in the process. Listen. Learn. Let the latitudes meet the longitudes. Don’t grow weary in the wait. It’s always worthwhile to let the process unfold. The longevity of the vision depends on it.

What visions or dreams has God given you? Maybe it’s to write a book or start a ministry. Maybe it’s to see revival sweep across every nation. Maybe it’s to be a part of a culture shift that brings God’s kingdom more near. Whatever it is, never give up in the process of watching it come to pass. Surrender it and hold it loosely while trusting the One who gave it and will complete it according to His timing, purposes, and plans as He fuels it with His power.

Long for the “deep and hidden things” of God. Plunge into His grandeur and let His sight become your own.

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor vain, empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all

Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all

“Be Thou My Vision”
